Summary: We encourage the Shakopee community to please share this important event widely. We’d like to extend a special invitation especially to our local Black and Asian communities who have experienced racism in light of COVID-19 and George Floyd’s death. We believe it’s critical for our BIPOC community to feel supported, heard, and have a safe space to gather. Please note we’ll be following our state’s COVID-19 guidelines. Space will be limited at this event so please sign up soon. We realize that online events do indeed leave some voices out and that additionally some conversations are not meant to be had online. We’re excited to see our community come TOGETHER! More details below!

The Shakopee Diversity Alliance is hosting a Shakopee People of Color Together: A Community Listening Session!

About this Event
Please join us for a listening session hosted by the Shakopee Diversity Alliance (SDA). This is a space for our community to collectively come together, connect, and share their stories in a BIPOC friendly setting. We want to listen to the voices of people of color living in Shakopee and want to amplify those voices. Our goal is to create a space where people of color from the Shakopee community can feel safe to connect with other members of the community. Due to recommendations from the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health, attendees will be required to register for this event. Due to the impact COVID-19 has on black and brown communities, we ask that everyone in attendance practice current social distancing guidelines. Please make sure you save your Eventbrite confirmation e-mail/ticket on your phone to check in for entry on the day of the event.

What will we do with this space?
Building a network of allies has never been more important. In particular, we’d like to better support our Black and Asian community. Following the listening session, SDA plans to bring a high-level report to the Shakopee City Council with suggestions, ideas, and changes needed for Shakopee to become a space where families of color/individuals can thrive and feel welcomed. Additionally, we’ll use ideas and suggestions shared to better support our community through diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice efforts.

Please note: Allies are welcome to come and listen. We just ask that they please be cognizant of the space they take at this event.

What should I bring?
A blanket and lawn chair to ensure social distancing.

This event is fully funded by generous private donors in our community. It is especially important to donate locally to organizations fighting racism and promoting diversity. Please consider donating using the red button on the upper right hand corner or by sending a check to “Shakopee Diversity Alliance”,
